The question everyone is googling

Is Cannabis Legal
in Thailand?

Medical cannabis is legal. Even as a tourist you can access it. Since June 2025, Thailand shifted from open dispensaries to a medical-only model. Cannabis flower now requires a Thai PT33 prescription, which any licensed cannabis clinic can issue in minutes.

CBD products under 0.2% THC? Fully legal, no prescription needed. Find them at 7-Eleven, pharmacies, and every wellness shop in tourist areas.

Recreational use without a prescription is now a criminal offense. Scroll down for details.

Do I Need a Prescription?
How Do I Get One?

Yes, you need a Thai PT33 prescription to purchase cannabis flower, and getting one is genuinely easy.

Here's how it works:
Walk into any licensed cannabis clinic → Fill out a short health screening form → Have a brief consultation with the on-site doctor → Walk out with your PT33 prescription, valid for 30 days.

Once you have it, you can buy flower on the spot if the clinic also sells it, or take your prescription to any licensed dispensary nearby. Qualifying symptoms: insomnia, chronic pain, migraines, Parkinson's disease, appetite issues.

Cost: Consultation is free to 500 THB depending on the clinic.

PRO TIP  Licensed clinics are everywhere in tourist areas: Khao San Rd, Sukhumvit, Phuket, Koh Samui. Look for the official Ministry of Public Health license at the entrance.

Are Dispensaries Still Open?
How Do I Find a Legit One?

Yes, around 11,000 licensed shops remain open across Thailand as of 2026. Dispensaries and cannabis clinics still operate almost everywhere in Thailand. The government is pushing them to convert into proper medical facilities in order to keep selling cannabis — but in reality, only a handful have actually made the move and have a real doctor on-site. Most are still running as regular shops while the transition plays out. Those without a doctor on-site are supposed to sell cannabis only to customers who already hold a valid PT33 prescription obtained from a licensed cannabis clinic — they cannot issue one themselves.

How to spot a legit one:
✓ Official Ministry of Public Health license displayed at entrance
✓ Licensed doctor or pharmacist on-site
✓ They ask for your PT33 prescription before selling flower
✓ Products have proper Thai FDA labeling

AVOID  Street vendors, market stalls, anyone selling without credentials. These are the primary targets of police stings in 2026. Buying from unlicensed sellers = same penalties as possession without a prescription.

🚫 Also illegal: ordering online
Buying cannabis through websites, LINE groups, or Telegram channels is illegal, even if the seller claims to be licensed. Legal dispensaries do not sell or deliver through social apps.

Finding shops: Open Google Maps and search "cannabis dispensary near me". Licensed shops show up with reviews, photos, and hours. You can also ask at your hotel or hostel for the closest reputable one.

Where Can I Legally Smoke?
Can I Smoke in My Hotel?

🚫 These are ALL illegal, even with a valid prescription:
Beaches · Parks · Streets · Hotel balconies · Restaurants · Any public space
Fine: up to 25,000 THB (~$700) + up to 3 months in jail.

Hotel rooms? Most hotels, especially 4 and 5-star ones, ban cannabis the same as tobacco. You risk your room deposit and getting kicked out.

Safe options:

  • Licensed cannabis lounges (some clinics have on-site consumption areas)
  • Hotels with a balcony: most allow smoking on the private balcony, just like tobacco. Ask at check-in to confirm
  • Private accommodation that explicitly allows it. Always ask first.
  • Some hotels have designated smoking gardens or zones. Worth checking before you book.

Bottom line  When in doubt, ask. When unsure, don't.

Are Edibles, Hash, Rosin
& THC Vapes Legal?

✗ Edibles: Effectively illegal
Anything above 0.2% THC is illegal, and that includes virtually every edible tourists actually want. The only technically legal edibles are Thai FDA-stamped products micro-dosed to such a low level that they produce almost no effect. If you're looking for an edible that actually does something, it's illegal. Don't be fooled by shops selling "legal" gummies — if it gets you high, it's not legal.
✗ Hash & Rosin: Illegal
Any cannabis extract with more than 0.2% THC, including hashish, rosin, wax, shatter, live resin, and any concentrate, remains classified as a Category 5 narcotic under Thai law. Possession carries serious criminal penalties regardless of whether you have a prescription. Dispensaries do not legally sell these products.
✗ THC Vape Cartridges: Doubly illegal
THC vape carts are illegal on two separate counts: the vaping device itself is banned in Thailand since 2014, and the THC extract inside (above 0.2%) is a controlled narcotic. Even if you see them sold somewhere, possession is a criminal offense. Do not buy or carry them.

Summary  Stick to flower with your PT33 prescription. Edibles that actually work, hash, rosin, concentrates, THC vapes: all illegal, all carry real consequences.

Can I Fly Domestically
Within Thailand With Cannabis?

Yes, with conditions. Domestic flights are a different story from international ones.

Legal domestic travel rules:
✓ You must have a valid Thai PT33 prescription
✓ You must carry under 30 grams
✓ Always pack it in checked baggage, not carry-on

If you put it in carry-on, Narcotics Control Board staff must inspect it. Expect significant delays and a very awkward conversation.

IMPORTANT  Without a prescription, carrying cannabis on domestic flights is also illegal. Same penalties apply.

Is CBD Legal?
What About Edibles & Gummies?

GOOD NEWS  CBD products containing under 0.2% THC are fully legal. No prescription, no fuss.

You'll find hemp-infused drinks at 7-Eleven, CBD oils at pharmacies, and wellness topicals in every tourist market. Thailand's CBD scene is thriving.

What's legal without a prescription:
✓ CBD oils, capsules, topicals (under 0.2% THC)
✓ Hemp drinks and food products (widely available at convenience stores)
✓ Thai FDA-approved edibles up to 1.6mg THC per piece
What's not allowed:
✗ Bringing CBD edibles, oils, or cosmetics into Thailand through customs
✗ Edibles without Thai FDA approval
✗ Products exceeding 0.2% THC without a prescription
✗ Driving under any cannabis influence

Does My Foreign Medical
Marijuana Card Work Here?

No. Not at all.

Medical marijuana cards from the USA, Canada, UK, Netherlands, Germany, Australia or anywhere else on Earth have zero legal standing in Thailand.

Thailand does not recognize foreign prescriptions or foreign cannabis cards. Period.

The easy solution:
Get a Thai PT33 prescription from any licensed cannabis clinic. Takes 15–30 minutes. Costs 200–500 THB (~$6–$15). Valid for 30 days. Any tourist aged 20+ can get one.

Can I Bring My Own Weed
or a Vape Into Thailand?

NEVER. Either one.

Bringing cannabis INTO Thailand:
Serious criminal offense. Customs screens for it. Prison time is real.
Vapes, nicotine or cannabis:
Illegal in Thailand since 2014. Carrying a vape device through Thai customs can result in:
Up to 10 years in prison OR fines of 20,000–30,000 THB (~$600–$900).

This includes sealed, unused vape pens in your checked luggage. Thai customs scans for them.

Both are actively screened for at all Thai airports: Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket, Chiang Mai. The equipment exists. The enforcement is real.

Thailand has some of the best cannabis available locally. There is absolutely no reason to bring any from home.

What Happens If You Get Caught?
What Are the Penalties?

Core penalties:
Penalties for purchasing without a prescription, public consumption, or buying from unlicensed vendors include fines up to 25,000 THB (~USD 700) and imprisonment up to 3 months.

More than 30 grams? That's treated as intent to distribute. You're looking at serious narcotics charges, not a tourist fine.

International smuggling? 10+ years in Thai prison. This is not a bluff. In March 2025, five foreigners were arrested trying to smuggle 144 kg. They face over a decade behind bars.

Where it happens: Most tourist arrests take place in Phuket, where enforcement is the most active. However, recent reports confirm tourists being stopped and fined in Bangkok too, particularly around Khao San Road and Sukhumvit. Don't assume you're safe just because you're in the capital.

Thailand's prison conditions are not pleasant. This is a country that takes drug law seriously. Respect it.

Flying internationally with cannabis: absolutely not.
Carrying cannabis on an international flight is a serious criminal offense under Thai law. Thai customs actively screens all departing passengers and baggage. There is no tourist exception, no prescription exception for leaving the country.

Even personal-use amounts caught at the airport = criminal prosecution. Large quantities = 10+ years in Thai prison. Your home country cannot protect you from Thai law.

Don't stress — people are having a great time.

Yes, the rules look complicated on paper. But thousands of tourists use medical cannabis without any trouble. The trick is simple: get your prescription, buy from a licensed shop, and don't light up in the street. That's genuinely it.

Thai people are some of the most welcoming in the world. The cannabis community here is warm, laid-back, and happy to help you figure things out. Dispensary staff will walk you through everything. Your hotel can point you in the right direction.

Use common sense, follow the basic rules above, and you'll have an amazing time. Thailand is still one of the best places on earth to enjoy medical cannabis — legally and safely.
